What Is The Right Breast Implant For Me?
The choice of going “under the knife” for breast augmentation is very personal decision for any woman. Once a woman makes this decision it is also important for her to decide which type of breast implant will suit her best. There are different breast implants available and each type can be differentiated based on the following factors:
1. FILLING: Every breast implant has two features in common with the other types. There is a filling material with a shell. Most breast implant shells are manufactured of silicone elastomer except in the case of polypropylene implants, which don’t contain silicone.
Based on the filling in these shells, there are two main types of implants. These are the Silicone breast implants and Saline breast implants. The main difference between these two is that Saline breast implant shells have a sterile salt water solution filling them whereas Silicone breast implants come pre-filled with a silicone gel. Saline breast implants are commonly used and are completely safe. This is because, in the event of the implant getting ruptured, the sterile salt water solution is readily absorbed by the body. This type of implant can be used in a pre-filled form or can be filled later, after being positioned in the body. In the case of the latter, the incisions made for surgery are considerably smaller due to the implant being filled after the surgical procedure is over. In contrast to the Saline breast implant, silicone breast implants only come in a pre-filled form so that the chances of the silicone gel entering the body during surgery are next to none. Also, since these are pre-filled, the necessary incision made to insert these implants also has to be larger. For safety reasons, current silicone implants are filled with a cohesive gel, so that even if there is a rupture of the implant, the gel would stick to itself. As it stands, silicone implants can only be put in place by plastic surgeons who are participating in cohesive gel silicone breast implant surveys. However there are other types of Saline breast implants to choose from based on shape and texture.
2. SHAPE: As far as the shape of the implant goes, use of contoured/ anatomical and round/ traditional implants can deliver the desired results.
Initially developed for women in need of breast reconstruction, contoured breast implants are teardrop shaped and imitate the breast's natural shape. During surgery, a surgeon has to make a precise incision for this type of implant to avoid movement or rotation, thereby stopping it from distorting the shape of the breast. The globe shaped round breast implant is the more common variety. It is designed to move freely inside the pocket created by the breast surgeon behind the breast, without distorting the shape of the breast.
3. TEXTURE: Breast implants may be textured or smooth depending on their function. In the first case, the implant's surface is roughed up to feel somewhat like sandpaper and the shell of the implant maybe made thicker to take into account the roughing. As the name suggests, smooth breast implants have a smooth surface so that the breast implant is able to move unhindered within the pocket behind the breast. In fact, the most common type of breast implants are smooth, round, saline breast implants. In conclusion, when considering breast augmentation surgery, it is pertinent to examine all the aspects of this procedure. And the breast implant is undoubtedly the most crucial aspect, simply because it is the implant that will enhance the appearance of your breasts. So choose one that suits your needs carefully based on the aforementioned factors.
